The health benefits of cod liver oil

The Vikings knew the health effects of cod liver oil very well and expressed the excellent natural source of fatty acids as their sea of gold.

The star ingredient in cod liver oil is Omega-3 and is known as an essential fatty acid because the human body is unable to make it, so it’s necessary to get it from food, or alternatively from food supplement.

The fatty acids are extracted from the liver of cod securing a pure and natural content of healthy ingredients. The main difference between liquid cod liver oil and omega-3 capsules is that while cod liver oil is made from fresh liver from cod, the oil used in most omega-3 capsules is made by squeezing oil from whole small fish, such as anchovies and sardines. Another difference is that cod liver oil contains natural vitamins A and D, while it must be added to oil from small fish.

Omega-3 from fish can be broken down into different types: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) & long-chain monounsaturated fatty acids (LC MUFA) which offer many health benefits. The World Health Organization recommends eating 1-2 portions of oily fish a week, equivalent to 200-500 mg of EPA and DHA.

The omega 3 fatty acids EPA & DPA contribute to the maintenance of normal function of the heart and cardiovascular system. The beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 250 mg of DHA and EPA. Vitamin D contributes to a normal function of the immune system and normal bone-building. Since Vitamin D is formed in the skin under the influence of sunlight, additional intake in the winter months is particularly important. Vitamin A is important to maintain a normal vision and immune system.

The problem is that, in our modern industrialized food system, omega-3s have become largely absent from the food chain while omega-6s have become overabundant. Even the healthiest diets contain too many omega-6s and not enough omega-3s. Decades of scientific evidence indicates that this EFA imbalance can contribute to chronic inflammation and a variety of chronic health issues. The most beneficial omega-3s that we are missing are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Purified fish oil is the best direct source of EPA and DHA

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has thoroughly reviewed all research on omega-3 benefits and has approved health claims for the heart, brain and vision.

In order to optimize your own health, simply add a daily dosage of cod liver oil.
